R. Bin Wong is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he has served since 2004. Previously, he was Chancellor’s Professor of History and Economics at UC Irvine. He directed the UCLA Asia Institute from 2004 to 2016 and currently holds a Distinguished Guest Professorship at Fudan University's Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences since 2009. He also serves on the International Advisory Board of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and the Berggruen Institute on Philosophy and Culture Academic Board.
Wong's research examines Chinese political, economic, and social change patterns from the eighteenth century onward, contextualized within Asian regional frameworks and contrasted with European historical trajectories. His work bridges world history and contemporary globalization, emphasizing how historical analysis informs modern global challenges. Primary research domains include Chinese historical development, cross-cultural economic comparisons between China and Europe, and long-term social transformations in Asia.
