R Alan Aitken

R. Alan Aitken is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, School of Chemistry EaSTCHEM, where he has been a faculty member since 1984. He was promoted to Professor in 2024 after serving as Reader (2018-2024) and Senior Lecturer (1997-2018). His academic journey began with a B.Sc. (First Class Honors) and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, followed by postdoctoral work at Colorado State University as a Fulbright Fellow.

Aitken's research interests center on synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry, with specializations in heterocyclic chemistry, flash vacuum pyrolysis, asymmetric synthesis, reactive intermediates, and organophosphorus/organosulfur chemistry. His work has significant industrial relevance, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. He has published over 350 research papers and has contributed extensively to major reference works including Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry and Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry.

Analysis of his recent publications (2024-2025) reveals continued focus on heterocyclic systems, particularly five- and seven-membered ring structures containing oxygen and sulfur. His work combines synthetic chemistry with computational methods to study electronic states and reaction mechanisms. Recent publications demonstrate expertise in Wittig rearrangements, cyclization reactions, and the synthesis of complex heterocyclic frameworks with potential pharmaceutical applications.

Aitken has supervised over 70 Honours Research Projects and numerous PhD students throughout his career. His research group actively participates in international conferences, particularly those organized by the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry where he has held leadership positions including Publicity Chair since 2018.
