Quito J. Swan is a Professor of History and Africana Studies at The George Washington University, and Director of the Africana Studies Program. His research focuses on Black internationalism, the African Diaspora, environmental justice, and decolonization. He has authored three books, including Pasifika Black (2022) and Pauulu’s Diaspora (2020), which have received major academic awards.
Swan’s work has been supported by prestigious fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute, and others. He has taught at Indiana University Bloomington, University of Massachusetts Boston, and Howard University. As an expert witness, he contributed to Bermuda’s 2020 Commission of Inquiry into land losses caused by colonial and military developments.

His research integrates historical analysis with contemporary cultural forms, such as Dancehall music’s role in social movements (upcoming book Born as a Sufferer, 2024). He advocates for public-facing scholarship that bridges academia and activism.
