Tracey Hucks is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Africana Religious Studies at Harvard Divinity School (HDS) and holds the Suzanne Young Murray Professorship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She previously served as Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Colgate University, where she was also the James A. Storing Professor of Religion and Africana and Latin American Studies. Her academic journey includes positions at Davidson College (James D. Vail III Professor) and Haverford College.
Education: BA and MA from Colgate University, MA and PhD in Religion from Harvard University (1998).
Research Interests: Focuses on African diaspora religions, with emphasis on Yoruba traditions, African American religious nationalism, and the role of Africana religious cultures in shaping diaspora identities. Her work spans multiple regions, including Brazil, Cuba, Nigeria, and the Caribbean.
Awards and Fellowships: Includes Radcliffe Institute professorship, recognition for her book Yoruba Traditions and African American Religious Nationalism, and membership in prestigious academic committees (e.g., American Academy of Religion, Society for the Study of Black Religion).
Advising and Grants: Collaborated with Dr. Dianne Stewart on a two-volume study of Trinidadian religious identity. Conducted research in over a dozen countries. Served on academic leadership boards, including the Corporation of Haverford College.
Labs/Teams: Central collaborator in transnational religious studies projects, particularly with Caribbean and African case studies.
