Quinton D. Cotton

Quinton D. Cotton is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh conducting critical research at the intersection of gerontology, health equity, and dementia care. His work focuses on dismantling systemic barriers for marginalized populations through community-centered interventions.

Dr. Cotton's academic foundation includes:

His research program rigorously examines how Social "ISMs" (racism, ageism, ableism), life events, and social position impact health across the lifecourse, with special emphasis on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). He investigates culturally responsive interventions for ADRD patients and caregivers, focusing on implementation science in community settings and the structural supports needed for marginalized populations. His methodology combines clinical trials with qualitative approaches to address health disparities in service utilization.

Analysis of Dr. Cotton's 2021-2024 publications reveals a concentrated focus on dementia caregiving within contexts of systemic disadvantage. His work consistently employs qualitative methods to explore implementation barriers in adult day services, hospital care, and community resources, with recurring themes of neighborhood disadvantage, cultural factors in self-care, and structural inequities affecting service access for Black families and other marginalized groups.

With two decades of macro-practice experience as clinic manager, foundation program officer, community planner, and public health consultant, Dr. Cotton integrates real-world insights into his academic work. He actively mentors trainees across social and health sciences and leads health promotion projects developing programmatic and policy innovations to strengthen community capacity.
