Quintanilha Alexandre is a Professor of Biophysics at the Biomedical Institute (ICBAS) of the University of Porto. He has held significant leadership roles, including Science Dean (ICBAS) from 1993-1999, Director of the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC), and President of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). His research focuses on Cell physiology and Biophysics, with contributions to Biochemistry and Biotechnology. He has been actively involved in national and international scientific organizations, serving on committees such as the OECD Working Party on Biotechnology and the European Association for Higher Education in Biotechnology.
Key awards include election to the Academia Europaea (1994), World Academy of Art and Science (1997), and Portuguese Academy of Medicine (1999). He has also chaired ethical and social aspects committees within the European Commission (ELSA) and contributed to science policy through roles like National Delegate for the IV Biotechnology Framework Programme (EC, 1994-1999).
- Leadership: Directed the Center for Environmental Studies (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) and chaired the Scientific Council of the Pavilion of Knowledge Museum in Lisbon.
- Advocacy: Promoted women in science via FEBS committees and advised on Luso-American development through FLA.
His career includes a prior role as Adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of California, Berkeley (1972-1991), alongside administrative roles at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
