Qingshan Wei is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University, holding the title of Alcoa Scholar. His research focuses on developing portable molecular imaging, sensing, and diagnostic tools for plants and humans, with a particular emphasis on lab-on-a-chip systems and CRISPR-based diagnostics. Key areas include non-invasive plant disease monitoring, wearable sensors, and smartphone-integrated diagnostic platforms.
Education:
- B.S. in Polymer Materials and Engineering, Zhejiang University (2005)
- M.S. in Polymer Materials and Engineering, Zhejiang University (2007)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Purdue University (2012)
- Postdoc in Bioengineering, UCLA (2016)
Research Interests: His group explores nanophotonics-enhanced diagnostics, microneedle-based DNA extraction, and real-time pathogen detection. Projects include developing cost-effective sensors for plant and human health, leveraging CRISPR-Cas12a technology and liquid metal nanoparticles for ultra-sensitive analysis.
Awards:
- Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2006)
- NSF CAREER Award (2003)
- R.J. Reynolds Award for Excellence in Teaching (2017)
- American Chemical Society Fellow (2011)
Lab & Teams: The Wei Group operates at the interface of engineering, chemistry, and biology. They collaborate on global health challenges, including field-deployable diagnostics for plant diseases and infectious diseases in resource-limited settings.
