Qin Yu serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at South China Agricultural University and Principal Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia (UWA) within the School of Agriculture and Environment. With over two decades of research experience since joining UWA in 2001, Dr. Yu leads investigations into herbicide resistance mechanisms across major weed species, integrating biochemical, molecular, and genetic approaches to address global agricultural challenges.
Academic qualifications include:
- PhD in Botany, South China Agricultural University (1999)
- M.Sc. in Plant Physiology, Central China Normal University (1987)
- B.Sc. in Biology, Central China Normal University (1984)
Research focuses on elucidating biochemical and molecular foundations of herbicide resistance, particularly target-site mutations (e.g., AHAS and EPSPS enzymes) and metabolic detoxification pathways (e.g., cytochrome P450 systems). Current work examines resistance evolution in species like Lolium rigidum and Eleusine indica, with emphasis on gene discovery for glyphosate, trifluralin, and paraquat resistance. This research directly supports sustainable agriculture through the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework.
Recent publications (2025) demonstrate a concentrated investigation into molecular resistance mechanisms across diverse weed species. Key patterns include cytochrome P450-mediated metabolic resistance, copy number variations affecting fitness advantages, and allelic interactions in target-site resistance. These studies employ genomic, transcriptomic, and functional validation approaches to identify resistance-conferring genes and alleles.
Notable recognition:
- Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow (2000-2001)
Dr. Yu actively supervises PhD candidates and visiting researchers while securing substantial competitive funding. Major grants include ARC Linkage projects ($483,182 for 2018-2021), ARC Discovery grants ($359,000 for 2013-2016), and GRDC funding ($194,500 in 2023), totaling over AUS$2 million across 14 projects. Current work focuses on gene discovery for multiple herbicide resistances through industry collaborations with FMC and Nufarm.
- ARC Linkage: $483,182 (2018-2021)
- ARC Discovery: $359,000 (2013-2016)
- GRDC: $194,500 (2023)
As a core member of the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (Phase 5), Dr. Yu collaborates internationally with researchers from South China Agricultural University and industry partners. The laboratory leverages genomic datasets and high-quality chromosome-level assemblies (e.g., Eleusine indica genome) to advance understanding of resistance evolution and develop novel management strategies.
