Pål Wrange is a Professor of International Law at Stockholm University's Department of Law, where he serves as Head of Subject for International Law and Course Director for the International Law and the Global Economy program. He is also the Director of the Stockholm Centre for International Law and Justice (SCILJ) and a member of the Swedish government's International Law and Disarmament Delegation, as well as the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
Wrange is a generalist public international law scholar with a critical inclination, writing theoretically, descriptively, and doctrinally. His research spans military force, international legal order, cyberspace governance, sovereignty, human rights law, international humanitarian law, criminal law, state immunity, and dispute settlement. His current projects focus on sovereignty in cyberspace and the impact of non-domestic norms on ordinary Swedish residents.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of international law with digital technologies, particularly regarding sovereignty, dispute resolution, and security in cyberspace. He has also maintained a consistent scholarly engagement with Western Sahara, self-determination, and the politics of international legal argumentation. His work bridges theoretical analysis with practical application, reflecting his extensive experience in government and international organizations.
Wrange previously served for eleven years as an international law adviser at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participating in multilateral negotiations and advising the government on international law issues. He also worked in Uganda for three years as a consultant on transitional law and as a political advisor to the EU. He has held visiting positions at Harvard Law School, the European University Institute, and the University of Melbourne.
As an educator, Wrange is Co-director and founder of the master's programme in public international law, lecturer and course director for Public International Law, and supervisor for PhD students. He is co-author of the main coursebook "Sverige och folkrätten" (Sweden and international law).
