Professor Prue Holmes is a leading academic in intercultural education and multilingual research at Durham University's School of Education. She holds a Docent title in Intercultural Competence at the University of Helsinki and is a founding member of the International Centre for the Comparative Study of Doctoral Education (ICCSDE). Her work focuses on multilingual research practices, intercultural pedagogy, and global education policies.
Previously, Holmes taught internationally in New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, and Italy. She has led major projects funded by AHRC, ESRC, and the EU, including 'Building an Intercultural Pedagogy in Higher Education in Conditions of Conflict' (BIPHEC) and the RICH-Ed project addressing interculturality in Chinese higher education.
Her research interests span intercultural dialogue, internationalization of curricula, and the role of language in doctoral education. Holmes co-convenes the annual Cultnet meeting and chairs the International Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication (IALIC). She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes on intercultural communication and qualitative research methodologies.
Key recognitions include AHRC Peer Review College membership, editorial roles in six journals, and adjunct professorships at Chinese universities. Her recent grants include an ESRC-funded project on intercultural dialogue among refugee youth (2024–2025).
Supervision focuses on intercultural citizenship, language policy, and doctoral education dynamics. Holmes collaborates globally with institutions like KU Leuven and the Islamic University of Gaza, emphasizing ethical research practices in multilingual contexts.
