Priyavrat Deshpande is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), a leading research institute in India. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and academic service, including placement coordination and organizing national mathematics competitions.
His research lies at the interface of algebraic topology and combinatorics, with a focus on hyperplane, toric, and submanifold arrangements, topological robotics, and the topology of configuration spaces. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of the cohomology and combinatorics of arrangement complements, polygon spaces, and graph complexes.
The trends in his recent publications (2019–2025) show a strong focus on combinatorial and topological aspects of arrangements, with recurring themes including the Braid arrangement, independence complexes, region counting, and applications to robotics. His work often combines algebraic topology with enumerative and structural combinatorics, particularly through the lens of simplicial and polyhedral geometry.
Scientific Awards:
- SERB MATRICS Grant (June 2018 – March 2021)
Priyavrat Deshpande has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students, including K. Menon, N. Daundkar, Anurag Singh, and Shuchita Goyal. He has been involved in securing research grants and fostering academic collaboration through workshops. He has co-organized several events such as the CS-Math Workshop on Applied Topology, the NCM Workshop on Cohen-Macaulay Complexes, and seminars on configuration spaces.
Labs and Teams: While no formal lab is mentioned, he leads a research group focused on algebraic topology and combinatorics, regularly mentoring students and postdocs. He collaborates with researchers nationally and internationally, including Alex Suciu, Graham Denham, and Ján Mináč, and has co-organized seminars and workshops that function as dynamic research teams in applied topology.
