Prerna Singh is the Mahatma Gandhi Associate Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs, and Associate Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. She holds affiliations with Brown’s departments of Political Science, International and Public Affairs, and Behavioral and Social Sciences. Prior to Brown, she was an Assistant Professor of Government at Harvard University. Her research focuses on comparative politics, nationalism, social development, and governance in South Asia and beyond.
Education: Undergraduate in Economics at Delhi University, India; graduate studies at the University of Cambridge (UK) and Princeton University (PhD in Politics). Her work examines how subnational identities influence welfare provision, the impact of census categorization on ethnic conflict, and the role of nationalism in fostering pro-social behavior. Notable contributions include her book Subnationalism and Social Development (Cambridge University Press) and articles in Comparative Political Studies and World Politics.
Research highlights include analyzing India’s state-level disparities in healthcare and education, the transformative role of subnational identities in Bihar, and the unintended consequences of census enumeration on group divisions. Her work bridges theory and practice, addressing questions of governance, equity, and identity politics.
Her recent scholarship critiques exclusionary nationalism’s global impacts on pandemic response and explores how institutional frameworks shape ethnic conflict dynamics.
