Prentiss Clark, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of South Dakota (USD), part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research and teaching focus on American literature, philosophy and literature, aesthetics, literature’s role in civic life, and writing craft. She has published articles in James Baldwin Review, Nineteenth-Century Literature, and Arizona Quarterly, and is completing projects for the Oxford Handbook of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Cambridge Companion to Ralph Waldo Emerson. Her upcoming book, Ralph Waldo Emerson: A Literary Companion, is set for publication by McFarland. Clark was honored with USD’s Belbas-Larson Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019) and currently serves as president-elect of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society.
Her pedagogical innovations during the pandemic included hybrid teaching formats and integrating online resources into her courses. She emphasizes the importance of fostering classroom engagement through creative solutions amid logistical challenges like social distancing and Zoom fatigue.
