Preetam Sharma is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (since August 2024). He holds an MS in Aerospace Engineering from IIT-Kanpur (2017) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee (2024). His research focuses on electrochemical energy storage systems, fuel cells, and sustainable vehicle power technologies.
Key research areas include polymer electrolyte fuel cell degradation mechanisms, catalyst layer characterization, and advanced combustion systems. He has contributed to projects on liquid fuels flameless combustion and multi-phase flow phenomena. His work involves experimental and computational studies on material durability, electrochemical performance, and system optimization.
Sharma has authored over 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, including contributions to Small, Journal of The Electrochemical Society, and Journal of Energy Resources Technology. He serves as a reviewer for top journals like Journal of Power Sources and International Journal of Hydrogen Energy.
He has received prestigious awards including the Tennessee Fellowship for Graduate Excellence (2019-2023) and the Outstanding Student Service Award (2024). His professional service includes roles as a lab convenor at IIT-Kanpur’s Advanced Combustion Lab and executive roles in academic research organizations.
Sharma has presented invited talks at institutions like FCRENEW and Robert Bosch Research Center, and holds a patent on a peripheral vortex reverse flow combustor design. His current projects aim to advance fuel cell durability for heavy-duty vehicular applications and sustainable energy systems.
