Pratap Misra is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University's School of Engineering. He joined Tufts in 2010 after a remarkable 40-year career in industry, bringing extensive practical experience to his academic role.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from University of California, San Diego (1973)
- M.S. from Lehigh University (1967)
- B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India (1965)
Dr. Misra's research has focused on GPS and emerging global navigation satellite systems (GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou) with particular emphasis on civil aviation applications. His work spans precision approach and landing systems, personal and automobile navigation combining multiple sensors (compass, camera, pedometer, accelerometer, gyro), and robust positioning solutions when GPS signals are unavailable. He has written two influential books: a graduate-level engineering textbook on GPS co-authored with Stanford's Per Enge, and 'GPS for Everyone: You Are Here' (2016).
His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on navigation integrity, fault detection, and multi-constellation system integration. His work addresses critical challenges in safety-critical aviation applications, with particular attention to Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) techniques and precision approach systems.
Dr. Misra's professional recognitions include:
- Kepler Award (2014)
- IEEE Fellow (2007)
- ION Fellow (2003)
- IBM Outstanding Achievement Award (1980)
- NASA Group Achievement Awards (1979, 1981)
He has secured significant research funding from the Federal Aviation Administration for projects including 'Characterizing Performance of the Ground Based Augmentation System' (2015-2017) and 'Risk Analysis to Enhance GBAS Performance for NextGen Applications' (2010-2014). Dr. Misra has served on numerous professional committees including IEEE AESS Pioneer Award Selection Committee and ION Fellow Selection Committee. He teaches courses at Tufts including System Dynamics & Controls and specialized topics on GPS & Satellite Navigation, Kalman Filters & Sensor Fusion, and GPS & Inertial Navigation for Autonomous Vehicles.
