Veena Misra is the Department Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the MC Dean Distinguished University Professor at North Carolina State University (NC State). She directs the NSF-funded Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST). Her academic journey includes earning her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from NC State between 1991 and 1995. Prior to joining NC State’s faculty in 1998, she worked at Motorola’s Advanced Products Research and Development Laboratories.
Her research focuses on power electronics, semiconductor devices, energy harvesting, and wearable sensor systems. Key contributions include advancements in low-power CMOS devices, nanoscale magnetics, and MEMS-based environmental and health monitoring systems. Misra’s work bridges nanotechnology and practical applications, such as self-powered wearables for continuous health tracking and environmental sensing.
Awarded the NSF CAREER Award (2001), the Holladay Medal for Excellence (2022), and named an IEEE Fellow (2011), Misra’s impact spans academia and industry. She serves on the Microsystems Exploratory Council for DARPA and has led major initiatives like the NSF Convergence Accelerator Grant for olfactory sensing systems. Her leadership includes overseeing the ASSIST Center, which develops wearable technologies for healthcare and environmental monitoring.
Misra’s advising and grants portfolio includes collaborations with industry and federal agencies, emphasizing translational engineering. Her team’s innovations in flexible thermoelectric generators and robust ECG systems highlight her focus on practical, scalable solutions. Current projects address challenges in wearable energy autonomy and disease early detection through integrated sensor platforms.
Labs and teams under her guidance include the ASSIST Center and collaborations with the NSF-funded IConS program. Her work is featured in media outlets discussing wearable technology’s future and semiconductor advancements for electric vehicles and clean energy.
