Prasenjit Guptasarma is a Professor in the Department of Physics and serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). He holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. His academic leadership roles include former Chair of the Physics Department (2015–2019), Special Assistant to the UWM Chancellor (2021–2022), and current full-time faculty member since 2000.
Dr. Guptasarma earned his PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, followed by postdoctoral work at Argonne National Laboratory and visiting positions at institutions in Italy. His research focuses on condensed matter physics, materials science, and energy-related materials, with funding from NSF and DoD grants. His group explores superconductors, magnetic materials, topological insulators, and advanced battery cathodes, employing techniques like X-ray spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and nanoscale characterization.
His teaching contributions include advocating for learner-centered pedagogy and serving as a Wisconsin Teaching Scholar. Awards include the NSF Career Award (2005), UWM Research Excellence Award (2008), and Research Fellow Award (2012). He has published over 130 articles, serves on the editorial board of Advances in Condensed Matter Physics, and collaborates internationally. His research group trains graduate students, postdocs, and undergraduates in interdisciplinary materials research.
