Professor Daniel Agterberg is a Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and serves as Chair of the Graduate Admissions/Finance Committee. His research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, particularly correlated electron systems, unconventional superconductors, and topological electronic structures. He holds visiting scientist positions at Argonne National Laboratory, ETH Zurich, and the University of Tokyo, and his work is supported by the National Science Foundation. Agterberg earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Physics from the University of Waterloo (1991) and University of Toronto (1992, 1996). Postdoctoral roles included research at ETH Zurich (1996–1998) and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (1998–2000).
His research interests emphasize superconductivity, quantum phase transitions, and the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity. Key topics include high-temperature superconductors (cuprates, pnictides), topological materials, and novel electronic phases emerging from electron correlations. His theoretical work often bridges microscopic models with experimental observations, such as quasiparticle scattering in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 and vortex dynamics in UTe2.
Agterberg has received awards from Argonne National Laboratory, Research Corporation, and multiple NSF grants. His recent work explores altermagnetism, odd-parity superconductivity, and pseudospin effects in nonsymmorphic materials. Collaborations include studies on symmetry-driven superconductivity, topological band structures, and vortex stripe phenomena.
His grants and advising focus on cutting-edge topics like pseudospin control in novel magnetic materials and high-field superconductivity in BiS2-based systems. Agterberg’s contributions span over 50 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing symmetry principles, topological superconductivity, and quantum materials.
