Pouran Famili

Dr. Pouran Famili is a full Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Preventive Dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She served as Department Chair from 2005–2014 and holds a secondary appointment in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Her academic journey includes degrees from the University of Tehran (DDS, 1972) and University of Pittsburgh (DMD, MDS, MPH in 2000, PhD in Epidemiology 2005).

Key research focuses include periodontal disease-osteoporosis interplay and dental implant survival in osteoporotic patients. She has received grants from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and NobelBiocare. Her work spans over 35 years in clinical practice and education, mentoring numerous residents and students. Dr. Famili actively reviews NIH grant proposals, dental journals, and MedEdPortal curriculum materials. She is a Diplomate in Periodontics and Implantology, and holds fellowships in multiple dental societies.

Professional service includes roles in the American Dental Education Association’s Women’s Affairs Committee and contributions to implantology symposia. She practices exclusively at the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty practice, University Dental Health Services.
