Piyali Chowdhury is a Senior Coastal Scientist at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) since May 2021 and collaborates with the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). She holds a Doctor of Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, specializing in climate change impacts on ocean waves and coastal morphodynamics.
Her research focuses on understanding climate change effects on coastal processes, particularly wave dynamics and sediment transport along Indian coastlines. She employs data-driven methodologies to assess teleconnections between global atmospheric phenomena and regional coastal hazards. Her work also involves developing early warning systems and risk perception frameworks using state-of-the-art digital technologies.
Dr. Chowdhury has contributed to advancing shoreline modeling and wave-structure interactions, including tsunami-induced debris-dam formation. She actively peer reviews for journals such as Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science and Progress in Oceanography.
Her current priorities include enhancing coastal resilience through improved hazard management strategies and sustainable coastal planning.
