Pirkko Mattila serves as Research Director and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki, holding a joint appointment with the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service since 2014. She supervises the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine and has maintained continuous research activity for over 35 years through roles at Haartman Institute and industry.
Her academic credentials include:
- Docent (2011)
- PhD (1993)
- Master of Science in Biochemistry (1989)
Dr. Mattila's research integrates medical biotechnology with molecular pathology, focusing on cellular stress responses in genetic disorders, oxidative stress mechanisms in age-related macular degeneration, and neutrophil inflammasome dynamics during viral infections. She pioneers single-cell analytics to dissect disease heterogeneity, with recent work establishing quality frameworks for multi-omics in personalized medicine through European infrastructure projects.
Her publication trajectory shows increasing translational focus since 2015, with 2024-2025 outputs spanning high-impact journals in omics methodology (Nature Biotechnology), ophthalmology (IOVS), and immunology (PLoS Pathogens). This reflects strategic alignment with EU initiatives like EATRIS-Plus for clinical implementation.
Dr. Mattila actively mentors doctoral candidates through structured supervision in the Biomedicine Programme. Her current research is sustained by two major grants:
- EU-OPENSCREEN ERIC Suomi FIRI (Academy of Finland, 2025-2027) as Project Manager
- Airway disease pathogenesis project (since 2011) as core participant
She directs the FIMM Single-Cell Analytics facility, a national infrastructure providing cutting-edge omics services to academic and clinical partners across the Nordic region. The lab emphasizes quality-controlled workflows and cross-validation with histopathology, supporting her vision of precision medicine grounded in molecular evidence.
