Dr. Pirjo Nikander serves as Research Director of the Doctoral School at Tampere University, overseeing doctoral education across disciplines. She holds adjunct professorships at the University of Helsinki and University of Tampere, with research focusing on ageing, ageism, and qualitative methodologies. Her academic background includes an M.Soc.Sc from the University of Tampere and a PhD from Loughborough University.
Her research examines:
- Age discrimination in labor markets and organizations
- Qualitative longitudinal methods for studying life course transitions
- Institutional practices surrounding age and employment
- Ethical dimensions of elderly care services
Nikander leads significant EU-funded projects including Horizon 2020 MSCA-ITN EuroAgeism and DocEnhance. Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on temporal aspects of ageism, with methodological innovation in qualitative longitudinal designs. She supervises doctoral candidates in international projects and has secured funding from Academy of Finland, Kone Foundation, and EU programs.
