Pirjo Harjanne

Pirjo Harjanne is an Associate Professor of Foreign Language Education at the University of Helsinki's Teachers' Academy and holds a University Lecturer title in the Department of Education. She is a Principal Investigator and Fellow of the Teachers' Academy, recognized for her qualifications as per expert evaluations at Jyväskylä and Turku Universities.

Her expertise spans foreign language teaching methodologies, communicative language practice, oral proficiency development, and intercultural communication. She has coordinated major projects like the national/international KIELO initiative examining FL classroom dynamics and contributed to EU-funded projects such as CEFcult and MASTS. She has also led ICT-focused educational reform projects like Kieli viestii.

Research interests include bridging theory-practice gaps in teacher education, innovative assessment strategies for intercultural competence, and digital tools in language learning. She has conducted comparative studies between Finnish, Chilean, and Swedish educational contexts, emphasizing cross-cultural perspectives.

Harjanne has been a visiting researcher at Stockholm University's Department of Language Education (2013–2014) and participated in international exchange programs in Sweden, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. She has organized student exchanges with Utrecht University and actively engages in in-service teacher training.
