Professor Piran White holds a Personal Chair in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York, where he has been since 1995. He is Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre and former Deputy Director of the NERC-funded Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Sustainability (BESS) Directorate. His research focuses on wildlife ecology, ecosystem services, and the links between ecosystems, health, and development. He has led numerous transdisciplinary projects, including work on coastal wetlands, invasive species, and bovine tuberculosis eradication strategies.
Education: PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Bristol and BSc from the University of East Anglia.
Research Interests: Wildlife disease management, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem functions, and the protective value of ecosystems. He explores interdisciplinary approaches combining ecological and socio-economic perspectives.
Grants & Projects: Includes £1.4m NERC BESS Directorate (2011–2017), EU-funded TB-STEP project (€2.9M), and OPAL (Big Lottery Fund £350K). He has coordinated ESRC seminar series and led involvement in Australia’s Invasive Animals CRC.
Awards: Recipient of the 2019 Public Health Journal Award.
Editorial Roles: Editor of Wildlife Research and former Associate Editor of Journal of Animal Ecology. Served on ESRC/NERC panels and advised Defra and Natural England.
Supervision: Advised over 30 PhD students on topics ranging from deer management to climate change impacts on disease.
Collaborations: International work in Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America. Active in policy-related projects like the Yorkshire and Humber Ecosystem Approach initiative.
