Pippa Virdee is Professor of Modern South Asian History at De Montfort University (DMU), within the School of Humanities, Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. She has been a core academic at DMU since 2006, following the completion of her PhD at Coventry University in 2005.

Her research and teaching focus on British colonial history, the Partition of the Punjab, women’s history in Pakistan, identity formation in post-colonial South Asia, and the role of memory and oral history. She explores both historical events and their contemporary legacies, including the digital representation of Partition narratives and diasporic identities.
Her recent publications include the monographs Pakistan: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2021) and From the Ashes of 1947: Reimagining Punjab (Cambridge University Press, 2018). Her scholarly articles span topics such as women in Pakistan International Airlines, digital memory projects, Partition violence, and refugee resettlement. The articles reflect a consistent engagement with gender, memory, identity, and transnational history, often drawing on oral testimonies and interdisciplinary methods.
She has received prestigious awards and grants, including:
- Gerda Henkel Foundation grant (2012–2014) on gender, Islam, and women in Pakistan
- British Academy Small Research Grant (2007) on Muslim women’s experiences of Partition
- Visiting fellowships in Pakistan (ITU Lahore, HEC)
- APPG Award (2009) for promoting Punjabi culture
She is an active public historian, contributing to the BBC, The Conversation, The Diplomat, and other media. She has supervised PhDs, provided peer review services, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her work bridges academic scholarship and public engagement, particularly in the areas of memory, identity, and South Asian heritage.
She leads and participates in public talks, podcasts, and conferences globally, emphasizing the importance of inclusive narratives and the democratization of historical discourse.
