Professor Pippa K Bailey serves as Professor of Renal Medicine at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol. She maintains a dual career as both a health services researcher and medical doctor specializing in kidney disease and transplantation, splitting her time between clinical practice as a Consultant in Renal Medicine at Southmead Hospital and research in the Population Health Sciences department.
Her educational background includes a BA from University of Cambridge (2002), BM BCh from University of Oxford (2005), Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (2008), Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene with Distinction (2009), Specialty Certificate Examination in Nephrology (2014), PhD (2016), and Certificate of Completion of Training in Renal Medicine (2019).
Professor Bailey's research focuses on improving access to and outcomes following kidney transplantation through mixed-methods approaches. Her work specifically addresses socioeconomic barriers to living-donor kidney transplantation, with major projects including The ASK Trial (a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial), The OPTIMAL feasibility trial for optimizing immunosuppression in older adults, and research on failing kidney transplants. She has secured substantial funding from NIHR, Kidney Research UK, and the Wellcome Trust, including a £1.9 million NIHR HSDR grant awarded in 2024.
