Prof. Ping Xiao is a Professor of Materials Science and the Rolls-Royce/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Advanced Coating Technology at the University of Manchester. He joined the Materials Science Centre in 2001, progressing through roles such as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Professor since 2008. His research focuses on ceramic coatings, degradation mechanisms, and novel manufacturing techniques for aerospace and energy applications. Xiao’s work has led to over 300 peer-reviewed publications, placing him among the world’s top 2% cited researchers. He chairs the Surface Engineering Division of the Institute of Materials, Mining, and Minerals (IOM3) and edits the Journal of the European Ceramic Society.
Education: Undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Chemistry at Jilin University, followed by a DPhil in Materials Science at the University of Oxford (1989–1993). Postdoctoral research at Oxford and later at Brunel University.
Research interests include ceramic coatings for high-temperature applications, environmental barrier coatings, and advanced composite materials. His group collaborates with industries like Rolls-Royce, National Physical Laboratory, and National Nuclear Laboratory, focusing on coatings for jet engines and nuclear reactors.
Awards include the IOM3 Tom Bell Surface Engineering Medal (2024) and the Rolls-Royce/Royal Academy Research Chair (2019). His research has contributed to fuel efficiency improvements in Rolls-Royce engines and advanced ceramic solutions for hypersonic aircraft.
Xiao leads a group of 3 PDRAs and 15 PhD students, with ongoing projects funded by EPSRC, the UK Department of Energy Security, and industry partners.
