Pietro Cannatella is a Lecturer (part-time) in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. He holds a BA in Ancient History (Manchester, 2017), an MSc in History and Theory of International Relations (LSE, 2018), and a PGCE in Latin with Classics (Cambridge, 2020-21). His research focuses on interdisciplinary investigations of ancient hegemonic conflicts, particularly how collective trauma influences state behavior. He explores how the Persian Wars' destruction of Athens conditioned Athenian foreign policy leading to the Peloponnesian War, using International Relations Theory as a framework.
His pedagogical interests include leveraging digital games (e.g., Total War: Saga) to enhance motivation and intercultural communication in secondary education. Recent work examines student and teacher perceptions of game-based learning in all-boys state schools.
