Pieter van Dokkum is the Sol Goldman Family Professor of Astronomy and Professor of Physics at Yale University, where he also serves as Chair of the Physical Sciences and Engineering Tenure and Appointments Committee. His research focuses on astrophysics and cosmology, encompassing studies of stars, stellar populations, distant galaxies, and astronomical instrumentation. He co-developed the Dragonfly Telephoto Array in New Mexico, the largest operational refracting telescope, which is being expanded for future projects.
- Education: PhD in Astronomy from the University of Groningen (1999).
His research interests span experimental astrophysics, including projects like 3D-HST and COSMOS-DASH. He actively mentors students through collaborations and thesis projects, emphasizing observational and instrumental advancements. The Dragonfly Array plays a central role in his work, enabling studies of faint structures in galaxies and deep-field cosmology.
He advocates for interdisciplinary approaches in astronomy and contributes to both observational and theoretical frameworks in his field.
