Prof. Dr. Pieter MEYNS serves as Senior Lecturer and Vice Dean of Rehabilitation Sciences at Hasselt University's Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy. He also holds the position of Vice-director of the Doctoral School Health and Life Sciences and serves on multiple examination committees for both Bachelor's and Master's programs in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy.
His research interests focus on biomechanics, physiotherapy, rehabilitation sciences, neurological and neuromuscular diseases, motor control, pediatrics, and sports sciences, with particular emphasis on balance control across different populations. Dr. MEYNS leads the Rehabilitation Sciences Research Group and has been instrumental in establishing the high-tech movement and experience lab 'Movelab.'
Dr. MEYNS's publication record demonstrates significant contributions to understanding balance control in children with cerebral palsy, older adults with vertigo, and people with multiple sclerosis. His work spans biomechanical fundamentals of balance control across the lifespan, sensory integration during standing and walking, and innovative task-specific training for fall prevention in older adults.
As an educator, Dr. MEYNS coordinates and teaches multiple courses including Basic Principles of Kinesiology, Kinesiology Parts 1 and 2, and General Scientific Internship and Master's Thesis. His teaching spans both the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 academic years, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to academic instruction.
Dr. MEYNS has supervised eight doctoral students to completion or in progress, including Sara Pauwels, Nina Jacobs, Charlotte Johnson, and others working on topics related to balance control, cerebral palsy, developmental coordination disorder, and multiple sclerosis. His research portfolio includes 26 active projects spanning from 2018 to 2030, with significant focus on technology-supported innovative rehabilitation and fall risk assessment.
