Professor Piet Sanders was a pioneering legal scholar and innovator, affiliated with the Erasmus School of Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He held the academic rank of Professor in Civil Law and the Main Principles of Civil Procedure from 1959 until his retirement in 1981. His career included roles as Secretary-General in post-war Dutch governmental bodies and influential advisory positions in corporate governance.
Education: Studied law at Leiden University, completed his PhD (cum laude) in 1945 under Prof. Cleveringa despite wartime disruptions. His research focused on corporate law, arbitration, and European legal harmonization.
Research Contributions: Architect of the European Limited Company framework, author of Dutch corporate law manuals, and co-designer of the United Nations' UNCITRAL arbitration rules. His 1959 inaugural lecture proposed a unified European company structure later adopted across the EU.
Professional Roles: Served on supervisory boards of KLM, Het Parool, and non-profits. Member of the Dutch Company Law Committee. Played a central role in shaping the 1986 Dutch Arbitration Law.
Legacy: Founder of Rotterdam's Faculty of Law (now Erasmus School of Law). Notable for integrating art into academia, commissioning Karel Appel's Tinbergen Building tiles. Philanthropist supporting emerging artists, donating his art collection to museums.
