Pierre Vanderhaeghen is a Full Professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Medicine and leads the Laboratory of Stem Cell and Developmental Neurobiology within the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research. He is also a member of the KU Leuven Brain Institute (LBI) and serves on the Councils of both the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Neurosciences, demonstrating significant academic leadership within the institution.
Professor Vanderhaeghen's research program investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying human brain evolution, with particular focus on species-specific features of cortical neurons. His work centers on synaptic neoteny—the delayed maturation of human synapses compared to other primates—and its implications for human cognitive abilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. He employs advanced techniques including xenotransplantation of human neurons, in vivo imaging, and AI-driven gene regulatory analysis to explore how human neurons differ from those of other species at molecular, cellular, and functional levels.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a cohesive research trajectory focused on human-specific genes like LRRC37B, SRGAP2, SYNGAP1, and CTNND2. These studies consistently bridge evolutionary biology with clinical neuroscience, examining how evolutionary changes in neural development contribute to both human cognitive uniqueness and vulnerabilities to neurodevelopmental disorders. His work shows increasing integration of mitochondrial metabolism with neuronal development timelines, suggesting a novel framework for understanding human brain evolution.
Professor Vanderhaeghen currently leads multiple significant research projects including studies on LRRC37B's role in cortical neurons (as Promotor for 2025-2028), AI-driven discovery of gene-regulatory mechanisms in human neuronal evolution (as Co-promotor for 2025-2028), and mitochondrial control of neurogenesis (as Promotor for 2023-2026).
