Pierre Saint-Amand is the Benjamin F. Barge Professor of French at Yale University, affiliated with the Department of French within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on 18th-century French literature, Enlightenment philosophy, and the cultural history of revolutionary periods. He previously held the Francis Wayland Professorship at Brown University and was honored as the Walter H. Annenberg Distinguished Professor of the Year in 1995. Saint-Amand has been recognized with the Chevalier distinction in the Order of the Palmes Académiques (2001).
His work bridges literary analysis with socio-political critique, examining topics such as the philosophy of Denis Diderot, the libertine novel tradition, and the anthropology of violence in Enlightenment thought. Recent publications include Suite libertine: Vies du XVIIIe siècle (2021), reinterpreting French libertinage, and The Pursuit of Laziness (2011), challenging capitalist labor ideologies. He is currently preparing a new book on Enlightenment-era darkness and obscurity (Les Lumières et la nuit).
His edited works include critical editions of 18th-century erotic novels like Thérèse philosophe, and he has written extensively on modern authors such as Marguerite Duras and Roland Barthes. Beyond his academic roles, Saint-Amand contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on literature’s role in shaping cultural and intellectual history.
