Pierre Ostiguy is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Valparaíso in Chile. With a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, he has taught at institutions across Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Chile, and published extensively in Spanish, English, and French. His scholarly work bridges political science, social theory, and cultural studies, with a focus on populism.
Ostiguy co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Populism (2017, 2019) and authored Populism in Global Perspective: A Performative and Discursive Approach (Routledge 2020). His research develops a sociocultural framework for analyzing populism as a performative phenomenon involving status dynamics between 'established' and 'outsider' groups, drawing on Norbert Elias' theories of informalization and Pierre Bourdieu's work on social hierarchies.
Key themes in his work include:
- Comparative analysis of left/right-wing populism
- Emotional and identity dimensions of populist movements
- Performance and rhetoric in political leadership
- Historical shifts in social status and political behavior
His recent project at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften explores the social theory foundations of populism, particularly the emotional dynamics of 'hurt' and status reclamation in movements like Trumpism, Peronism, and Erdogan's Anatolian populism.
