Pierre Boulay is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Université de Sherbrooke, where he has been faculty since 2013. Previously, he served as Professor at Université de Moncton from 1996 to 2004. His research is conducted through the Centre de recherche sur le vieillissement du CIUSSS de l'Estrie – CHUS, focusing on clinical research related to aging, chronic diseases, and exercise physiology.
Dr. Boulay earned his Doctorate in Physical Activity Sciences from Université Laval in 2001, a Master's degree in the same field from Université Laval in 1992, and a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Université de Moncton in 1989.
His research interests center on the intersection of aging, chronic disease management, and exercise physiology. Specifically, he investigates hypertension and aging, exercise prescription for chronically ill populations, thermoregulation in older adults, exercise prescription for children, and cardiorespiratory capacity assessment. His work demonstrates particular expertise in how aging affects thermoregulatory responses during exercise-heat stress, especially in populations with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular conditions.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on understanding how aging affects heat dissipation mechanisms, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. His research consistently examines the physiological mechanisms underlying thermoregulatory responses during exercise in hot environments, with particular attention to gender differences, vascular responses, and sweating mechanisms in older populations.
Dr. Boulay has secured multiple research grants, including projects on heat stress in older adults with type 2 diabetes (2013-2017), feasibility of type 2 diabetes control through low glycemic index diet and interval training (2015-2016), and workplace dynamization (2016). His research often involves collaboration with Glen P. Kenny and other prominent researchers in the field of environmental physiology.
He has been actively involved in knowledge translation, presenting at numerous conferences and delivering workshops on exercise prescription, cardiovascular implications of medications, and managing chronic diseases through physical activity. His work bridges the gap between research and clinical practice, particularly in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise prescription for special populations.
