Pier Carlo Tommasi is an Assistant Professor of Japanese at Vassar College's Department of Chinese and Japanese, joining in 2024. Previously, he worked at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He holds a Ph.D., MA, and BA from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy.
His research focuses on medieval Japanese literature, particularly warrior culture and its impact on selfhood concepts. He specializes in auto/biography, book history, and classical Japanese language pedagogy. His courses include JAPA 205 (Intermediate Japanese), JAPA 305 (Advanced Japanese), and JAPA 306 (Tradition and Creativity in Japanese Culture).
Key awards include the 2024 OVPRS Faculty Award for mentoring undergraduate research and the 2023 Japan Studies Endowment Award. His work bridges literary analysis with historical contexts, emphasizing citation practices and warrior intellectual frameworks in premodern Japan.
