Her research and creative work explore how speculative fiction, particularly solarpunk and eco-speculative genres, can model transformative societal responses to the climate crisis. She investigates how narrative structures can defamiliarize dominant cultural norms—such as nuclear family models—and envision equitable, sustainable futures. Her work emphasizes community resilience, found kinship, and radical storytelling as tools for adaptation and resistance.
Wagner’s recent publications include the novel A Shot of Gin (2023), the novella When We Hold Each Other Up (2023), and the edited anthologies Fighting for the Future (2023), Almanac for the Anthropocene (2022), and Sunvault (2017). These works collectively examine post-apocalyptic survival, decentralized governance, mutual aid, and the emotional landscapes of environmental collapse. The recurring themes in her writing include climate justice, feminist and queer futurisms, renewable energy societies, and decolonial worldbuilding.
She is an active member of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association and regularly presents at major conferences such as WorldCon and the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE). Her blog essays, like the 'Writing the Resistance' series, advocate for storytelling as a revolutionary practice, encouraging writers to abolish normative family structures and imagine alternative social systems.
Phoebe Wagner is also engaged in public scholarship through workshops—such as her solarpunk writing workshop at The Radical Cat bookstore in Reno—and online platforms like Nerds of a Feather, Flock Together. She maintains a strong digital presence at phoebe-wagner.com and on X (@pheebs_w), where she shares insights on speculative literature and climate narratives.
