Philippe Maurice's research primarily focuses on medieval history, with particular emphasis on the Gévaudan region in southern France. His work spans family history, religious history, notarial studies, and medieval Western anthropology. He has conducted extensive research on family structures, religious practices, and social organization in medieval Gévaudan, with special attention to the role of notaries, the impact of religious wars, and the dynamics of local communities. His research methodology combines paleography, archival analysis, and anthropological approaches to understand medieval society.
Dr. Maurice has received multiple research grants, including two from the École française de Rome (2002 and 2003) for studies on Pope Urbain V and Guy de Chaulhac, surgeon to several popes. His scholarly output includes numerous books and articles, with his most recent publications addressing notarial practices, religious wars, and social mobility in sixteenth-century Gévaudan.
