Philippe Chao

Philippe Chao serves as Adjunct Professor of Viola at George Mason University's School of Music, with additional appointments at Washington Adventist University and Catholic University. An accomplished performer, he holds positions with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Post-Classical Ensemble, and Grand Teton Music Festival. His career includes solo performances with numerous orchestras nationwide and collaborations with renowned international artists.

His research focuses on expanding viola repertoire, evidenced by his editorial work on premiere editions of Marco Anzoletti's compositions and commissioned pieces from contemporary composers like Sergey Akhunov.

Chao holds degrees from the University of Minnesota and University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, with additional studies at Britten-Pears School (UK) and Cleveland Institute of Music. His pedagogical lineage includes mentors Roland and Almita Vamos, Michael Zaretsky, and Robert Vernon.
