Philippe Bataille

Philippe Bataille is a Director of Studies (Professor) at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), affiliated with the Laboratory of Political Anthropology (LAP) under the Institut interdisciplinaire d'anthropologie du contemporain (IIAC). He concurrently serves as a member of the Center for Clinical Ethics at Cochin Hospital in Paris.

His research centers on:

• Racism and systemic discrimination
• Sexism and feminist theory
• Sociological dimensions of serious illness (particularly cancer)
• Ethical tensions in medical decision-making
• Clinical dynamics in reproductive medicine and palliative care

Bataille previously directed the Center for Sociological Analysis and Intervention (CADIS, EHESS-CNRS) from 2009-2015 and chaired EHESS's Doctoral and Master's Programs in Sociology until 2014. His current work investigates how medical and care relationships transform the category of 'subject' in high-stakes clinical scenarios where ethical conflicts obstruct treatment pathways.
