Dr Philippa Sheail is a Lecturer in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Moray House School of Education and Sport and the Institute for Education, Community and Society (IECS). Her work bridges digital education, cultural heritage, and organizational theory, focusing on media literacies, digital volunteering, and temporal studies in higher education.
Education:
- PhD in Education (University of Edinburgh) – Thesis: 'Time-shifting in the digital university: temporality and online distance education'
- MSc in E-Learning (University of Edinburgh)
- Diploma in Computing (Open University)
- MA (Hons) English and Scottish Literature (University of Edinburgh)
Research Interests: Interdisciplinary exploration of digital cultural heritage infrastructure, media platforms and information literacies, public pedagogies, and the role of time in educational systems. Recent projects include Infrastructure Futures for Digital Cultural Heritage (funded by AHRC) and Data bodies in the library.
Teaching: Leads modules on Information Literacies and Qualitative Research Methods in the MSc in Digital Education. Open to PhD supervision in areas like digital literacies, informal learning, and cultural heritage.
Awards:
- SRHE Prize for Newer Researchers (2014) for work on internationalisation and digital divides in higher education.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Centre for Research in Digital Education and the Centre for Data, Culture and Society. Collaborates on projects like the Manifesto for Teaching Online and the Library of Our Time initiative.
