Philippa Ryan

Dr. Philippa Ryan is the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Assuring Autonomy at the Department of Computer Science, University of York. Her work focuses on safety assurance in software and autonomous systems, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Her research interests lie at the intersection of software engineering and safety-critical systems, with a strong emphasis on Software Safety, AI Safety, and the Responsible use of AI. She investigates methods for assuring machine learning systems at run-time and explores the broader implications of responsibility in autonomous technologies. Her PhD focused on safety analysis of operating systems, and she continues to contribute to the advancement of safe and trustworthy computing systems through research and industry collaboration.

Dr. Ryan is a chartered engineer and previously served as chair of the Safety Critical Systems Club working group developing guidance for assuring autonomous systems. Her industrial experience includes writing safety assurance cases and providing expert advice across multiple domains.
