Philippa Garety is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at King’s College London and holds appointments at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. She specializes in psychosis, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and digital interventions. Her work bridges clinical practice and research, focusing on reasoning biases in delusions, early intervention services, and innovative therapies like AVATAR therapy for auditory hallucinations. She co-led the first UK randomized controlled trial (RCT) demonstrating benefits of early intervention services and contributed to NICE schizophrenia guidelines.
Education: PhD in Clinical Psychology from King’s College London (under David Hemsley), followed by clinical roles at the Institute of Psychiatry and Oxford. Leadership: Former Clinical Director of the Psychosis Clinical Academic Group (2010–2017), Chair of London’s Early Intervention in Psychosis Clinical Reference Group (2015–2017). Awards include the British Psychological Society’s Shapiro Award (2002) and NIHR Senior Investigator status (2008–2015).
