Professor Philipp Thies is a faculty member in the Department of Renewable Energy at the University of Exeter, within the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. He was promoted to Professor in July 2023, after serving as Associate Professor (2019–2023), Senior Lecturer (2015–2019), and Lecturer (2013–2015).

Philipp Thies' research centers on the reliability engineering of renewable energy technologies, with a strong focus on offshore wind energy. His work investigates critical components such as dynamic submarine cables and mooring systems for floating platforms. He employs a multidisciplinary methodology combining analytical system reliability assessment, Bayesian statistical methods for data-scarce scenarios, numerical modeling, and physical testing using the ISO9001-accredited Dynamic Marine Component (DMaC) test facility. His research is heavily industry-collaborative, addressing real-world engineering challenges in harsh marine environments.
His leadership extends to major funded projects including the EPSRC Supergen ORE Hub (Co-Director), CableDyn, STARENA, IDCORE CDT, and EU initiatives like FLOTANT and OPERA. These projects reflect a consistent trend in advancing the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of offshore renewable energy systems, particularly in the context of floating wind and resilient energy networks.

He has secured significant grant funding from EPSRC, Innovate UK, RAEng, EU Horizon 2020, Carbon Trust, and the GCRF. His work often integrates socio-technical perspectives, especially in community energy and global development contexts.
He is a key figure in the Dynamic Marine Component (DMaC) test facility at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus, a core infrastructure for physical reliability testing of marine components. He is also affiliated with broader university networks such as the Global Systems Institute, Health Analytics @Exeter, and Exeter Marine Policy @Exeter, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his research.
