Philipp Kastner is a Senior Lecturer in International Law at UWA Law School, University of Western Australia, where he has been since 2014. He holds degrees from McGill University (LL.M., D.C.L.) and the University of Innsbruck (Dr. iur.). His research focuses on resolution of armed conflicts, international criminal law, transitional justice, public international law, and legal pluralism. He teaches courses such as Public International Law, International Criminal Law, and the Law of the Sea at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Proficient in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Arabic, Innu, and Braille, Kastner’s work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). His collaborations span global legal and academic networks, addressing issues like cybercrime, hybrid courts, and peace mediation frameworks.
He has advised on legislation, including Australia’s Criminal Code Amendment (Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes) Bill 2024, and contributed to parliamentary reports on maritime law and Indigenous reconciliation in Canada. His media engagements include analyses on Sudan peace talks and Ukraine’s conflict resolution.
Kastner’s research emphasizes the interplay between legal norms and political realities, advocating for inclusive and resilient approaches to justice in post-conflict settings. He has over 35 publications, including articles on peace negotiations, hybrid courts, and pedagogical innovations in international law education.
