Philip Van Beynen is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Geography/Environmental Science and Policy Program at the University of South Florida's School of Geosciences, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from McMaster University (1994–1998), and earlier degrees from the University of Auckland. His research focuses on human-environment interactions, climate change, karst systems, and environmental sustainability. He has conducted studies in North America, the Caribbean, and New Zealand, emphasizing paleotempestology, groundwater vulnerability, and sustainable management of small island states.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Geography, McMaster University, 1994–1998
- Master of Arts (Geography, First Class Honours), University of Auckland, 1992–1994
- Bachelor of Arts (Geography), University of Auckland, 1989–1991
Research Interests:
- Climate change impacts on karst ecosystems
- Environmental indices for human disturbance assessment
- Paleoclimatic reconstructions using speleothems and cave sediments
- Contaminant fate in karst aquifers
- Sustainable development strategies for small island nations
Recent Publications Trends: Recent work emphasizes climate adaptation strategies for island nations, karst groundwater vulnerability modeling, and paleoenvironmental records of hurricanes and precipitation patterns. Methodologically, he combines GIS analysis, speleothem isotope studies, and sedimentary proxy data.
Awards: None explicitly listed in provided materials.
Advising & Grants: Advised/co-advised multiple graduate students (e.g., A. Pathak, J. Polk) and led projects funded by NSF and other agencies. Active in curriculum development as former Graduate Director (2021–2023).
Labs/Teams: Leads research on karst hydrology and climate change impacts at USF’s School of Geosciences. Collaborates internationally on projects in Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas.
