Dr. Philip V. McHarris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Black Studies at the University of Rochester. His research focuses on racial inequality, housing, and policing, with a particular emphasis on transformative visions for safety and justice. He previously held a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship at Princeton University's Department of African American Studies and the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab. McHarris earned his PhD in Sociology and African American Studies from Yale University, supported by fellowships from the Ford Foundation and NSF.
Key works include Beyond Policing (Legacy Lit | Hachette), which critiques policing systems, and Brick Dreams (Princeton University Press), an ethnography on New York City public housing.
