Philip Stier is a Professor of Atmospheric Physics and Head of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics at the University of Oxford's Department of Physics. He leads the Climate Processes Group and serves on the steering committee of the Oxford Climate Research Network. His research examines anthropogenic perturbations to Earth's climate system, specializing in aerosol-cloud interactions and their role in climate change.
Stier's work focuses on physical climate processes, particularly how aerosols influence cloud formation and precipitation. He employs interdisciplinary approaches combining global climate models, satellite observations, in-situ measurements, and machine learning to study climate dynamics. He currently directs a European Research Council project on aerosol-precipitation effects and leads the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network iMIRACLI, which bridges climate science and AI to train climate data scientists.
