معرفی
Dr. Philip Rosenthal is a Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of Pediatric Hepatology and Medical Director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology, Dr. Rosenthal holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Transplant Hepatology.
Dr. Rosenthal received his M.D. from SUNY Brooklyn School of Medicine in 1975 and completed his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at UCSF. He joined the UCSF faculty in 1995 after serving as Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA. His educational background also includes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training from UCSF in February 2021.
Dr. Rosenthal's research spans multiple areas of pediatric hepatology, with significant focus on hepatitis B and C treatment, biliary disease genetics and immunology, bioartificial liver support systems using porcine hepatocytes, and quality of life following pediatric liver transplantation. His work bridges clinical practice with translational research, particularly in the areas of cholestatic liver diseases and viral hepatitis in children. Recent publications demonstrate his expanding interest in malaria research and its intersection with liver disease.
Analysis of Dr. Rosenthal's recent publications reveals a strong focus on clinical trials for pediatric liver conditions, particularly Alagille syndrome and biliary atresia, alongside ongoing work in hepatitis C treatment. His research increasingly incorporates molecular and genetic approaches to understand disease mechanisms while maintaining a strong clinical orientation focused on improving patient outcomes. The breadth of his work spans from basic science investigations of drug resistance mechanisms to large multicenter clinical trials and public health studies.
- UCSF Chancellor's Award for Public Service (2002)
- American Academy of Pediatrics Murray Davidson Award (2013)
Dr. Rosenthal serves as Principal Investigator for the Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN) at UCSF, funded by NIH U01DK062500 since 2002. He is also Principal Investigator for research on malaria drug resistance mechanisms (NIH R01AI139179) and Co-Principal Investigator for a study on malaria prevention and birth outcomes in Uganda (NIH U01AI141308). His grant portfolio demonstrates a successful balance between liver disease research and malaria-related investigations. As a mentor, he has contributed to training numerous pediatric hepatologists through his leadership roles in national research networks.
Dr. Rosenthal directs the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at UCSF and leads the UCSF site of the Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN). His clinical team manages one of the largest pediatric liver transplant programs in the United States, with expertise in complex cholestatic liver diseases, metabolic liver disorders, and viral hepatitis. His laboratory work, often conducted in collaboration with basic science researchers, focuses on translational approaches to understanding liver disease mechanisms and developing novel treatments.
