Professor Philip Oreopoulos is a Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto's Department of Economics, part of the Faculty of Arts & Science. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, an M.A. from UBC, and a B.A. from Western Ontario. His research focuses on labour economics, education policy, and behavioral economics, particularly examining interventions to improve educational outcomes and reduce disparities. He has conducted large-scale field experiments, such as the Pathways to Education program, which provides comprehensive support to at-risk high school students. His work has been recognized through awards like the Harvard William Lyon Mackenzie King Visiting Professorship (2010).
Key research interests include the long-term benefits of education, the impact of behavioral interventions in education, and policy analysis related to college access and completion. He has published extensively in top journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Political Economy. His studies on graduating during economic recessions highlight lasting career and health impacts, emphasizing the need for targeted policy interventions. He currently serves as editor of the Journal of Labor Economics and is a Research Associate at NBER.
